Civil Rights

Problems for Black Americans:

1)
Segregation:
In the south the
Jim Crow laws ensured that Black and White Americans were separated. They had separate schools, buses, shops, restaurants and cinemas.
Black Americans had poor education and the worst paid jobs
The state laws meant that to be able to vote a black American had to pass a literacy test and pay the poll tax. This prohibited many from being able to vote.
The
Ku Klux Klan continued to be active.

2)
In the North
Many black Americans had moved north during the Great Migration of the inter war years. However they lived in ghettos, had poorly paid jobs and faced high levels of crime.

3) Violence - Emmett Till 11 year old black boy from Chicago visiting relatives. Wolf whistled at a white woman, beaten to death by her husband.
