The Impact of World War Two

A) Employment
1941 - only 27% of workforce were women. Most women worked at home or were domestic or clerical workers.
1945 - 37% of workforce were women
300,000 women served in the armed forces
•largest increase was the defence industries - 4x as many worked in them as had in peacetime.

B) Attitudes
•opposition from co-workers - many men were not used to seeing women in the workplace, felt that they should be with their family.
•Government - campaigns took place to get women into the workplace - Rosie the Riveter

C) Black Women
•employment increased especially in the cities.
•some joined the forces as nurses but could only treat black soldiers.

D) After the war
•Government urged women ‘to go back home’ and to ‘give your job to a veteran
•resentment at lost independence
