Trotsky - effective leader.Tight control. Courageous had a special train which took him to places where fighting was hardest.
Control of western Russia and large industrial areas. Had main cities and effective communication with a rail link between Petrograd and Moscow.
Had none. Allies resented the Bolsheviks pulling out of world war one and feared the spread of communism.
Guilty of atrocities. Reds supported mainly by the peasants.
The WhitesOpposite of the Bolsheviks - nobles, middle class anyone associated with old system of government.
Different aims:Some wanted the Tsar back, some wanted dictator all wanted Bolsheviks out.
Lacked good leadership. Generals didn’t trust each other. Squabbling.
Scattered around central area - communication difficult therefore found it difficult to organise themselves.
Had support of France and Japan and USA who sent forces to help them.
Guilty of atrocities. Many changed sides.
