What were the Key features of the Five year plans?
1) Gosplan set production targets which industries had to meet.
2) The first five year plan emphasised heavy industries - coal, iron, oil, steel and electricity to help future industrial growth.
3) Targets were unrealistic yet remarkable achievements made - 1500 new industrial plants built and 100 new towns many east of Ural mountains.
4) Second five year plan gave heavy industry top priority but new industries such as
communications and chemical industries also grew enormously.
5) Third five year plan ran only for three years - abandoned when the Soviet Union entered the Second World War.
