Stalin: Industrialisation:

Why did Stalin want to industrialise the Soviet Union?
1) Many regions in the Soviet Union were backwards
2) To improve its military strength
A) Russia had been weak during World War One
B) Fear of Germany and the West ‘Either we make good the difference in ten years or they crush us’ - Stalin

3) Compete with the Western world / Be less dependent on imports from the west.
A) Stalin believed the USSR should ‘overtake the capitalist countries’
B) Socialism in one country - strengthen and stabilise Russia
C) Then communism could spread to other countries.

4) Mechanise farming by producing agricultural machinery such as tractors.
5) The success of industrialisation will be effective propaganda for communism both Russia and abroad.
