Essential information: 1) In the late 1600’s a Dutch clockmaker called Anthony van Leeuwenhoek made some of the earliest discoveries. Although the images were fuzzy he saw the existence of tiny animals invisible to the naked eye. 2) Joseph Lister developed a microscope which could magnify objects 1000 times without distortion in 1830. 3) In the 1850’s Louis Pasteur, a French scientist, discovered that micro-organisms turn beer bad. 4) Pasteur proved through a series of experiments that microbes caused decay. 5) When Pasteur discovered that a specific germ was causing disease amongst silk worms and the French silk worm industry he showed that germs caused disease. 6) The work of Robert Koch proved that germs caused disease amongst humans.
