1. The Greeks had many Gods which they believed controlled their lives. |

2. Asklepios was the Greek God of healing, he had had two daughter: Hygea and Panacea. |

3. Shrines to Asklepios were called Asklepions. Ill people would go here for cures, they would stay over night and be visited by priests. There were also gymnasiums and baths. Those who were cured would leave inscriptions on the walls. |

4. The Greeks developed a natural explanation for illness, the four humours. They believed that illness was caused by an imbalance in the humours. This led to people eating and drinking in moderation. |

5. To correct an imbalance a patient may have to exercise (phlegm), change their diet (bile) or use a bleeding cup (blood) |

6. Hippocrates – Greek Doctor. Important influence on medical practice. Doctors were encouraged to observe and record. Hippocrates also created the Hippocratic oath which set a code of ethics for doctors. He also supposedly wrote the Hippocratic corpus which were a collection of books about symptoms and treatment. |
